BEST PRACTICE: RECOGNIZING POTENTIAL – TAKING OPPORTUNITIES

A ship supplier from the outskirts of Bremen was fond of the professional potential of his trainee from Spain and proactively supported the recognition of his professional qualification.

Companies receive an increasing number of applications from specialists who have acquired their professional qualification abroad. But often they cannot judge the quality of foreign training and uncertainty occurs whether an applicant can be contracted for jobs customary in trade. More and more companies tend to gain security about the equivalence of foreign qualifications through formal recognition of an applicant’s qualification. The formal recognition is comparable to an equivalence assessment and a legally binding procedure indicating the conformity of a foreign professional education to German standards. This way the transparency of and confidence in the knowledge, skills and abilities of foreign specialists are created.

In a somewhat different way, a construction company from Hamburg has found a new employee through professional recognition: By request of the Hamburg Chamber of Crafts the company qualified a young man from Ghana through an adjustment qualification to receive a full recognition as construction worker. Impressed by his skills, the company employed the ambitious young man as a construction worker finally.

FOR US IT WAS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY. WE RECEIVE MANY OF OUR JOBS ON CONDITION THAT EXCLUSIVELY QUALIFIED PERSONNEL IS INVOLVED. BUT SPECIALISTS IN THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR ARE RARE. A SMALL ENTERPRISE LIKE OUR COMPANY HAS TO BREAK NEW GROUND.

he ship supplier would like to do it likewise. The company located in the North of Germany specialises in trading and storage of ship spare parts as well as in overhauling engine components. In January 2016 the company was notified by the department of business development: On behalf of  their twin town Alcalá de Guadaíra (Andalusia / Spain) the department was looking for a traineeship for a Spanish IT graduate. The company offered the desired traineeship without further ado and good experiences with their young trainee resulted in a job offer afterwards. Both parties agreed to conduct an adjustment qualification for the IT graduate to ensure his employment as a specialist.

WE WOULD OFFER AN ADJUSTMENT QUALIFICATION AT ANY TIME AND GIVE AN ACCOUNT OF OUR POSITIVE EXPERIENCES TO OTHER COMPANIES.

In cooperation with the Hanoverian Chamber of Industry and Commerce the company developed an in-house adjustment qualification program and enabled the young IT administrator to participate. In addition, half of the costs for the recognition procedure were borne by the ship supplier. In return, the young man committed himself to improve his knowledge of the German language and implemented a small IT project independently. This approach paid off: Today the young professional is working as an IT specialist for the company.

AS A MEDIUM-SIZED ENTERPRISE EXCLUSIVELY OPERATING B2B, RECRUITING PERSONNEL IS A FREQUENT PROBLEM. THEREFORE, WE SEE APPLICATIONS FROM SPECIALISTS FROM ABROAD AS A REAL CHANCE TO FILL OUR VACANCIES.
